Join us for a multilingual celebration featuring Le Petit Prince in French, Hindi and Gondi as we launch a translation project of this most popular story in Gondi language in collaboration with PIAF Solutions, Fondation Jean-Marc Probst pour le Petit Prince, and Eklavya Foundation.

Beyond artistic collaboration, this project aims to promote the Gondi language and create a dynamic of cultural and linguistic exchange at a local level. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince is a landmark work of world literature with universal humanist values. Its message — such as its implicit criticism of material values and celebration of authentic human relationships —can resonate favorably to a large audience. This translation project is part of an international initiative launched by the French agency P.I.A.F and the Jean-Marc Probst Foundation for The Little Prince: “The Little Prince at the bedside of the world’s languages” is financing the translation of the Little Prince in rare, little-known or endangered languages. It is thanks to their support that the Gondi version will come into being.

The Little Prince (French: Le Petit Prince) is a story written and illustrated by French writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It was first published in English and French in the United States by Reynal & Hitchcock in April 1943 and was published posthumously in France following liberation. The story follows a young prince who visits various planets, including Earth, and addresses themes of loneliness, friendship, love, and loss. Despite its style as a children’s book, The Little Prince makes observations about life, adults, and human nature.

The Little Prince became Saint-Exupéry’s most successful work, selling an estimated 140 million copies worldwide, which makes it one of the best-selling in history. The book has been translated into over 627 different languages and dialects worldwide, being the second most translated work ever published, trailing only the Bible. The Little Prince has been adapted to numerous art forms and media, including audio recordings, radio plays, live stage, film, cinema television, ballet, and opera.

 

The Author

Born on June 29, 1900 in Lyon into an old aristocratic family, Antoine de Saint Exupéry did his military service in the air force and became a pilot. His profession nourished his writing, and both earned him the Legion of Honor. His novels Courrier Sud (1929), Vol de nuit (1931, Prix Femina) and Terre des hommes (1939, Prix de l’Académie française), were a worldwide success, as were the stories he wrote during the war, in exile in the United States: Pilote de guerre (1942) and Le Petit Prince (1943).

Having rejoined the Free French Forces, Saint Exupéry was shot down on a mission on July 31, 1944.

In keeping with the spirit of the French writer and aviator, the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation carries out various actions around the world to improve the daily lives of young people.
