Jangarh Singh Shyam (1962-2001) was a brilliant contemporary Indian artist from the village of Patangarh in the Mandla district of eastern Madhya Pradesh, as well as an accomplished musician. His style of painting became known when he came to work in Bharat Bhavan before getting internationally recognized thanks to the «Magiciens de la Terre » exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris (1989). He later displayed his artworks in Tokyo and New York as well all over India. As the demand for Jangarh Singh Shyam’s work increased, he trained members of his family and community to assist him in his paintings.
His pioneering style has been called “Jangarh Kalam”. His artworks continue to inspire his family as well many members of the Pardhan Gond community. These painters have different artistic identities and sensibilities, and take inspiration from a diversity of themes, even if the natural elements, mythological stories and village life are prevalent.
The aim of this exhibition curated by Akhilesh is to pay tribute to this exceptional artiston on the occasion of his 63rd anniversary, while highlighting the vitality of his legacy through the creativity of talented artists who continue to experiment and carry the colors of Jangarh Kalam to the four corners of the world, while remaining rooted in the land that has inspired them so deeply.
