In December 1984, a dreadful tragedy caused by human negligence that shocked the whole world took place in Bhopal. The collective exhibition ‘Bhopal 84’ showcases the artwork of ten artists of Madhya Pradesh that have been impacted by the industrial catastrophe. At that time, these artists who were directly or indirectly connected with the newly-created cultural centre Bharat Bhavan, expressed themselves on the tragic situation. Forty years later, they wish to reaffirm their sorrow: time has passed but this calamity continues to have a profound impact on many people’s lives.

THE EXHIBITION IS OPEN TO ALL DURING OFFICE HOURS

Before the inauguration of the Bhopal 84 exhibition, we are pleased to host the round-table “40 years after the Bhopal Gas Tragedy: Developments and Challenges”.

In December 1984, a gas leak at the Union Carbide pesticide factory in Bhopal resulted in the death of thousands and left many more injured. More than 40 years after this unprecedented disaster — still considered one of the most severe industrial accidents of the 20th century — this calamity continues to have a profound impact on institutions, social relations, and individual lives.

This round table will examine the catastrophe from multiple perspectives, highlighting the complexity of the current situation. How can recognition for diseases linked to the disaster be obtained decades later? What support is available now to victims and their families? What regulations have been implemented since the gas leak to prevent industrial risks and protect the environment? Are there better safety regulations and improved risk management at industrial sites today?

Drawing from their experiences as scholars and social actors involved in the gas relief efforts, participants will explore contemporary environmental, legal, and health challenges faced by survivors and their descendants.

Round-table open to all.
