Locked away in his room, a student spends the entire summer working on his thesis. Suddenly, an old photo, lost among his notes, stirs memories of his childhood, reconnecting him with the sensitivity and wonder that had long been buried within him. He begins to spend his days feeling the wind, watching the clouds, daydreaming… and falling in love. His imaginary journeys and contemplation of his surroundings sometimes intrigue him, move him, and often fill him with wonder. But, more than anything, they change him forever.
“Antichambre,” both an animated film and live performance, blends multiple artistic forms into a single captivating experience. This production marks another significant step in the company’s ongoing exploration of cross-disciplinary art, engaging audiences of all ages and cultures. Beyond words, it opens up a space for imagination and poetry. Using just paper, charcoal, and a guitar, the artists bring the creative process to life, immersing viewers in the intimate and often solitary act of creation.
Premiered in 2023, this latest work by the company has been recently showcased at prestigious venues, including the Barbican Centre in London, the Venice Biennale, and Théâtre de la Ville de Paris, among others. The two artists behind STEREOPTIK, Romain Bermond and Jean-Baptiste Maillet, push their artistic boundaries with this production, combining animation techniques like hand-drawn cartoons, stop-motion, painting, object theatre, and music. As both a film and a live creation, the show reveals the intricacies of the company’s creative process, offering audiences a rare glimpse into the art of making.
